Airport Kiosk vs Bank vs App — How Much You're Really Losing
CCW Editorial · 2026-04-08 · 6 min read
An airport euro can cost you 12% more than the same euro from an app. Here's the live data — and what to do instead.
We priced the exact same conversion — $500 USD into EUR — across five different channels on the same morning. The cheapest gave us 460 EUR. The most expensive gave us 405 EUR. That's $55 lost on a $500 transaction, or 11% of your money.
The price of convenience
- Airport kiosk: 8–12% spread, plus a flat fee on top.
- Hotel front desk: 6–10% spread, often capped at small amounts.
- Major retail bank: 3–5% spread on debit-card FX, 1–2% on wires above a threshold.
- Wise / Revolut / OFX: 0.3–1% all-in on most G10 pairs.
- Mid-market (the 'real' rate): zero — but you can't actually transact at it.
Why airports are so brutal
Airport kiosk operators pay enormous rent for guaranteed footfall, plus they know you're tired, in a hurry, and out of options. The only winning move is not to play — withdraw cash from a fee-free ATM after you land instead.
The smart traveler's stack
Carry a multi-currency debit card (Wise, Revolut, or one of the new 'travel cards' from your home bank) for everyday spending. Withdraw a small amount of local cash from an in-network ATM for taxis and tips. Never convert at an airport. Never convert at a hotel.
