GBP to ZAR over the last 30 days
Over the 23 ECB working days from 2 Sept 2026 to 2 Oct 2026, 1 GBP ranged from 21.5932 ZAR (25 Sept 2026) to 22.0902 ZAR (2 Oct 2026), averaging 21.7662. Today's 22.0902 is above that average by 1.49%.
For 1,000 GBP, that range is the difference between 21,593.20 and 22,090.21 ZAR: 497.01 ZAR, or 2.30% of the low. The biggest one-day move was +0.89% on 2 Oct 2026.
Example: a bank or card that sets its rate 3% worse than mid-market would pay 21,427.51 ZAR for 1,000 GBP today instead of 22,090.21, keeping 662.71 ZAR. That 3% is more than this rate's whole 30-day range, so the margin you pay matters more than the day you convert.
Who converts GBP to ZAR, and why
Pounds to rand is one of the busiest UK corridors for South Africans living in Britain, along with British visitors on safari and wine-route holidays, and UK pensioners who have retired to the Western Cape.
- Sending money to family or a home loan in South Africa
- Budgeting a Kruger or Cape Town holiday
- Moving savings for a return to South Africa
Tip: The rand is volatile and can move several percent in a week. For a large transfer, a provider that lets you lock the rate when you book removes the risk of a swing between booking and payment.
About the two currencies
The British Pound Sterling (GBP) is issued by the Bank of England and used in the United Kingdom; Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man issue their own pound notes at par, and Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and St Helena have pounds pegged one-to-one. Scottish and Northern Irish banks also print sterling notes. They are legal currency but shops in England can refuse them, so travellers often swap them before leaving.
The South African Rand (ZAR) is issued by the South African Reserve Bank and used in South Africa, and as legal tender in Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia through the Common Monetary Area, whose currencies are pegged to it one-to-one. The name comes from the Witwatersrand, the ridge where Johannesburg's gold was found. The rand is heavily traded as a proxy for emerging-market risk, so it moves more than most currencies.
