HKD to USD over the last 30 days
Over the 23 ECB working days from 2 Sept 2026 to 2 Oct 2026, 1 HKD ranged from 0.1274 USD (1 Oct 2026) to 0.1275 USD (7 Sept 2026), averaging 0.1275. Today's 0.1274 is below that average by 0.04%.
For 1,000 HKD, that range is the difference between 127.43 and 127.55 USD: 0.11 USD, or 0.09% of the low. The biggest one-day move was +0.03% on 22 Sept 2026.
Example: a bank or card that sets its rate 3% worse than mid-market would pay 123.61 USD for 1,000 HKD today instead of 127.44, keeping 3.82 USD. That 3% is more than this rate's whole 30-day range, so the margin you pay matters more than the day you convert.
Who converts HKD to USD, and why
Hong Kong dollars are converted to US dollars by visitors coming home from Hong Kong, by businesses settling invoices, and by people with Hong Kong pensions (MPF), salaries or property income moving money to the US.
- Bringing Hong Kong salary or MPF withdrawals to a US account
- Pricing goods from Hong Kong electronics and watch dealers
- Changing leftover HK$ notes after a trip
Tip: Because the Hong Kong dollar is held between 7.75 and 7.85 per US dollar, the rate itself barely moves. What changes the amount you receive is the provider's margin and transfer fee, so compare those rather than waiting for a better day.
About the two currencies
The Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) is issued by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, with notes printed by HSBC, Standard Chartered and Bank of China (Hong Kong) and used in Hong Kong. Since 1983 the Linked Exchange Rate System has held the dollar within a 7.75–7.85 band against the US dollar, so HKD/USD barely moves. The Octopus card pays for transport and small purchases.
The United States Dollar (USD) is issued by the Federal Reserve and used in the United States and its territories, and also Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama (alongside the balboa), Timor-Leste, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and several Caribbean territories. It is the world's main reserve and invoicing currency: oil, most commodities and a large share of world trade are priced in dollars, which is why so many cross rates are worked out through it.

Why does the HKD to USD rate hardly change?
Hong Kong's Linked Exchange Rate System, run since 1983 by what is now the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, keeps the Hong Kong dollar between 7.75 and 7.85 per US dollar. The HKMA buys or sells Hong Kong dollars at those limits, so 1 HKD stays close to 13 US cents.
