JPY to USD over the last 30 days

Over the 23 ECB working days from 2 Sept 2026 to 2 Oct 2026, 1 JPY ranged from 0.00627 USD (2 Sept 2026) to 0.00652 USD (9 Sept 2026), averaging 0.00640. Today's 0.00634 is below that average by 0.85%.

For 1,000 JPY, that range is the difference between 6.27 and 6.52 USD: 0.26 USD, or 4.13% of the low. The biggest one-day move was +2.30% on 3 Sept 2026.

Example: a bank or card that sets its rate 3% worse than mid-market would pay 6.15 USD for 1,000 JPY today instead of 6.34, keeping 0.19 USD. This rate moved more than 3% within the month, so timing mattered as much as the margin.

Who converts JPY to USD, and why

Most people converting yen to dollars are pricing something in Japan: a hotel or rail pass booked from the US, a purchase from a Japanese online shop, or a salary or allowance paid in yen. Returning travellers also change leftover ¥1,000 and ¥10,000 notes back to dollars.

Tip: US banks often buy back yen notes at a poor rate and rarely take coins. Spend coins in Japan (convenience stores and station lockers take them) and only bring home notes you will reuse on a later trip.

About the two currencies

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is issued by the Bank of Japan and used in Japan. The yen has no subunit in everyday use, so prices carry no decimals. Coins go up to ¥500 and notes are ¥1,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 (new designs entered circulation in July 2024).

The United States Dollar (USD) is issued by the Federal Reserve and used in the United States and its territories, and also Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama (alongside the balboa), Timor-Leste, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and several Caribbean territories. It is the world's main reserve and invoicing currency: oil, most commodities and a large share of world trade are priced in dollars, which is why so many cross rates are worked out through it.

Frequently asked questions about JPY to USD

Why do yen prices look so large in dollars?

The yen has no cents in everyday use, so a price like ¥1,500 is a whole number of the smallest unit people spend. One yen is worth less than a US cent, so divide by the rate shown above rather than reading the yen figure as dollars: ¥10,000 is the common banknote and the usual unit for budgeting.

How much is 1 JPY in USD?

1 JPY (Japanese Yen) equalled about 0.00634 USD (United States Dollar) on 2 Oct 2026 (mid-market reference rate). Rates move throughout the trading day; the converter above shows the latest figure.

How much is 100 JPY in USD?

100 JPY was about 0.63 USD on 2 Oct 2026. Banks, card networks and airport kiosks add a margin to the mid-market rate, so the amount you actually receive is lower; the markup calculator shows how much a given margin costs.

How much is 1000 JPY in USD?

1,000 JPY was about 6.34 USD on 2 Oct 2026. For larger transfers, compare the final amount received from two or three providers, because fees and exchange-rate margins differ more than headline rates suggest.

What is the inverse rate — 1 USD to JPY?

1 USD was about 157.6700 JPY on 2 Oct 2026. Use this when you're pricing items in United States Dollar and need a quick mental Japanese Yen reference.

When is the best time to convert JPY to USD?

Forex liquidity is highest when London and New York overlap (8 AM–12 PM ET), which usually means the tightest spreads. Avoid weekends and major central bank announcement days unless you're hedging.

Is the JPY/USD rate shown live?

The converter loads the latest available rate when the page opens: European Central Bank reference rates (published once each working day around 16:00 CET) with a commercial feed for currencies the ECB does not cover. Figures in the text are dated. Your provider's quoted rate will include its own margin.
