Despite being highly developed, Germany is surprisingly cash-loving. Bring euros — many Berlin bars, bakeries, and restaurants are cash-only.

Paying by card
Cards are accepted at hotels, supermarkets, and chain restaurants. Always carry €50-100 cash for everything else.
Cash and ATMs
Use Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank, or Commerzbank ATMs for the lowest fees. Avoid 'Reisebank' kiosks at airports.
Tipping
5-10% rounded up. Tell the server the total when paying, don't leave money on the table.
Scams to avoid
Generally very safe. Watch for pickpockets on Berlin's S-Bahn and around Brandenburg Gate.

Before you go
- When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in EUR; the conversion it offers usually includes a wide margin.
- Tell your bank you are travelling and carry two cards on different networks in case one is declined.
