Thailand Travel Money Guide
Thailand is a cash-first country outside major hotels and shopping malls. Bring or withdraw plenty of baht.
Capital: Bangkok · Currency: Thai Baht (THB)
Paying by card
Cards accepted at international hotels, malls, and tourist restaurants. Street food, markets, taxis, and tuk-tuks are cash only.
Cash and ATMs
Foreign card ATM fee is 220 baht per withdrawal — withdraw the maximum to minimize fees. Bangkok Bank tends to be the most reliable.
Tipping
Round up taxis and leave 20-50 baht in restaurants. 10% is generous for higher-end venues.
Scams to avoid
The 'temple is closed today' tuk-tuk scam, gem store schemes, and rigged jet-ski rentals in Phuket. Always negotiate before getting in any vehicle.

Before you go
- When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in THB; the conversion it offers usually includes a wide margin.
- Tell your bank you are travelling and carry two cards on different networks in case one is declined.
- Check your card's foreign transaction fee and put it in the budget converter's fee field.
