CNY to USD over the last 30 days

Over the 23 ECB working days from 2 Sept 2026 to 2 Oct 2026, 1 CNY ranged from 0.1488 USD (2 Sept 2026) to 0.1494 USD (21 Sept 2026), averaging 0.1491. Today's 0.1492 is above that average by 0.05%.

For 1,000 CNY, that range is the difference between 148.78 and 149.36 USD: 0.58 USD, or 0.39% of the low. The biggest one-day move was +0.15% on 18 Sept 2026.

Example: a bank or card that sets its rate 3% worse than mid-market would pay 144.68 USD for 1,000 CNY today instead of 149.15, keeping 4.47 USD. That 3% is more than this rate's whole 30-day range, so the margin you pay matters more than the day you convert.

Who converts CNY to USD, and why

Yuan to dollars is used by US importers checking supplier quotes, students and families with savings in China, and shoppers comparing prices on Chinese platforms quoted in RMB. Travellers returning from mainland China change unspent yuan here too.

Tip: Mainland China limits how much foreign currency residents can buy each year (a US$50,000 annual quota), so large yuan-to-dollar transfers usually need documents such as a tuition invoice. Start the paperwork early.

About the two currencies

The Chinese Yuan (CNY) is issued by the People's Bank of China and used in mainland China (Hong Kong and Macau have their own currencies). Renminbi is the currency's name and yuan its unit. Onshore CNY may trade only within 2% of a daily central parity fixing; offshore yuan (CNH) trades freely in Hong Kong and can differ slightly. Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate daily spending.

The United States Dollar (USD) is issued by the Federal Reserve and used in the United States and its territories, and also Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama (alongside the balboa), Timor-Leste, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and several Caribbean territories. It is the world's main reserve and invoicing currency: oil, most commodities and a large share of world trade are priced in dollars, which is why so many cross rates are worked out through it.
